A thunderclap in Petit-Mesnil: the gardeners’ association accuses Yvan Lebrun, a local resident, of using non-organic compost to help his vegetable garden thrive.
It all began during an informal exchange in front of the village florist, where Bertrand Descamps, president of the Petit-Mesnil gardeners’ association, allegedly discovered bags of commercial non-organic compost in the trunk of Yvan Lebrun’s car. The information quickly spread and sparked outrage among the village gardening community.
“We are an environmentally conscious community,” confides Agnès Boulanger, a member of the association. “If these allegations are true, it is a true betrayal of our shared values. We have always advocated for the use of locally made organic compost to nourish our gardens.”
Indeed, in Petit-Mesnil, compost is a serious matter. Every year, the association hosts a contest for the best compost, and Yvan Lebrun frequently wins the award.
In a statement to the press, Yvan Lebrun denied the accusation, claiming that he had purchased the non-organic compost for educational purposes. “I wanted to show my son the difference between the organic compost we produce and commercial compost,” he explains. “I never imagined that this could spark such controversy.”
In any case, the affair has sown discord within the gardening community. “It’s as if we’ve lost our innocence,” sighs Agnès Boulanger. “We will never be able to look at a pile of compost the same way again.”
