An unusual and intense conflict breaks out between two octogenarians of the Petit-Bois Hamlet, involving the supremacy of garden gnomes.
The usually peaceful Hamlet of Petit-Bois is shaken by an unprecedented quarrel: a battle of garden gnomes. Two long-time residents, Marcel and Germaine, have triggered a ruthless ego war, involving their precious garden gnomes.
Everything started when a gnome from Marcel’s collection, named ‘Gerard the Dwarf’, was found in a bad position, face down, in Germaine’s garden. Having firmly denied any involvement in the matter, Germaine discovered shortly afterwards one of her favorite gnomes, ‘Bibine the Imp’, overturned in her own fish pond.
“I can’t believe Marcel would do this,” exclaimed Germaine. “Bibine was my favorite gnome. He had never known such humiliations”. Marcel, on the other hand, continues to proclaim his innocence and accuses Germaine of triggering a gnome vendetta to distract the community from her own misdeeds.
Tension reached its peak last Sunday, when the rest of the Petit-Bois community was awakened by clattering noises, only to discover later that it was Marcel and Germaine, throwing their garden gnomes at each other across the hedge separating their properties. “I’ve preached non-violence all my life, but when the gnome ‘Pierre the Elf’ landed on my terrace, I felt I had to retaliate,” said Marcel, shaking his head slowly.
The local community is divided, with some supporting Marcel and others Germaine, creating a tension that has been described as “totally unexpected and oddly intense” by the hamlet’s mayor. The situation is so tense that the sale of garden gnomes has been temporarily suspended throughout the hamlet, in hopes of preventing a future escalation of the situation.
Meanwhile, the garden gnomes live in peace, far from the tumult, at the back of garden sheds, waiting for calm to return.
