According to an incredible yet increasingly popular conspiracy theory, the famous fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” is not just a story of fantastic love. Self-proclaimed researchers suggest that the tale is merely propaganda invented by the global mattress industry to boost sales of their products. They claim that the princess’s sleep is actually a coded metaphor for the importance of a good mattress for good health.
“The evidence is right there, right under our noses! Why did the princess sleep for a hundred years? Because she had an incredibly comfortable mattress, of course!” exclaims Herbert Lumbar, a member of this strange community of believers in “MattressGate.” His thesis, while not convincing to the average person, seems to resonate among certain insomniacs who are convinced that their mattress is the cause of their nightly woes.
These “mattress conspiracy theorists” even go further. According to them, the famous kiss from the prince was not meant to break the spell but rather to divert our attention from the true star of the tale: the mattress. Major brands would have secretly funded film adaptations to anchor this romantic vision in the public’s mind.
“Of course, people think this idea is crazy, but isn’t that precisely the goal of conspiracies? To make the truth too ridiculous to be believed?” ponders Lumbar. “I’m not saying everyone should throw their mattress out the window, but it’s about time we question the stories we’ve been told since childhood.”
It remains to be seen whether this conspiracy theory will gain popularity, or if it will be doomed to remain a silly idea from a fringe group. One thing is for sure, however: the next time you read “Sleeping Beauty” to your children to help them fall asleep, you’ll think twice.
