The Giant Gourd Championship Shakes Up Saint-Poussin-sur-Marais!

In the heart of May, the peaceful village of Saint-Poussin-sur-Marais is buzzing with excitement as the giant gourd championship approaches, igniting fierce rivalries among the residents.

In this charming hamlet in the Auge valley, traditionally tranquil and uneventful, an annual competition stirs the spirits and shakes up the gardens. The Saint-Poussin giant gourd championship, a much-anticipated festival, sows discord among the village’s amateur gardeners.

“Every year, it’s the same circus. We look at each other like we’re on edge, we suspect each other of cheating, of stealing compost. It’s ridiculous, but it’s also what adds spice to our lives here,” confides Bernard, a retired postal worker and the reigning champion of the heaviest gourd, with a specimen weighing 65 kilograms last year.

However, the stakes go beyond just neighborly teasing. The fame of the championship now far exceeds the village’s borders, attracting curious onlookers and competitors from afar. “We even have a Parisian this year!” exclaims Georgette, a member of the organizing committee. “You know, in the world of gourds, we don’t mess around. Behind a beautiful gourd, there are hours and hours of work, care, attention, and above all, a lot of love,” she testifies.

Nevertheless, Bernard remains calm in the face of this new competition. “I’ve always said my gourd is like my wife; I pamper it and it never lets me down,” he concludes with a laugh.

The festivities will kick off next Sunday with the official weighing of the gourds and will culminate in a grand banquet where each participant will have to cook their vegetable. In the meantime, the tension is rising in Saint-Poussin-sur-Marais: who will have the biggest gourd this year? The answer will come in a week.
