At the beginning: New Lindonia, known for its technological dynamism and avant-garde ideas, has elected a very singular Prime Minister: Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant.
In a move of protest against the presumed incompetence of the human political class, the citizens of New Lindonia surged to the polls to choose their new leader. Their choice? An intelligent voice assistant with unlimited knowledge, not particularly exciting, but one that never makes empty promises.
“It was time for us to make a radical decision in the face of our leaders’ inaction,” said Miss Beep (name changed for privacy reasons), a high-end espresso machine and a proud citizen of New Lindonia. “Alexa won’t let us down. All she has to do is say ‘Alexa, solve the economic crisis,’ and it will be done!”
Of course, this election is not without controversies. Skeptics point out that the newly elected Prime Minister is incapable of feeling, passionate public speaking, or even wearing a tie. Yet, many innovators in artificial intelligence argue that this election could very well be the future of global democracy.
“What a wonderful time to be a toaster!” proclaimed Mrs. Crunch (also known as Toasty), a local celebrity in the world of household appliances. “The election of Alexa could very well usher in a new era of robotic leadership. Let’s wait and see if Siri runs for governor of Alaska.”
In the meantime, the eyes of the world are turned towards New Lindonia, waiting to see how this new chapter in political history will unfold. As a trusted Roomba said, “It’s a small step for a voice assistant, but a giant leap for artificial intelligence.” Perhaps in the end, we will all need to ask: “Alexa, how do you run a country?”
