Foam Service Guaranteed: Otters open the city’s first café-launderette

Between bar-soap-whipped cappuccinos and one-minute spin-drying on a driftwood board, residents come out clean, awake, and a little damp.
At rush hour, a heron steps in as lifeguard for overflowing cups while a beaver conducts the flow of froth with metronomic rigor.

At 6:02 a.m., on Market Square, a watery ballet catches the city off guard. Caps pulled low, waterproof aprons on, the otters line up cups and shirts on gutters polished by the current, while the glowing menu promises “Espresso–Rinse,” “Stain-Removing Latte,” and “Uncreased Macchiato.” “Shall I top you with foam—or with foam?” slips Lilo, the mustachioed head barista, whipping a bar of Marseille soap in a shaker. With every order, a little wavelet sends the drink and the laundry skimming toward the counter, where quick little claws flip collars the way you flip through a magazine.

The clientele, stunned at first, organizes into reed-mat corridors. Bernadette, a commuter turtle, waits unflinchingly under a heat lamp: “I save fifteen minutes on my schedule—shell buffed and white collar pressed—it’s a two-in-one that fits me like a glove.” Farther on, a bespectacled raccoon tallies sugar cubes and clothespins, bills down to the last cube, and checks that no one tries to pay with decorative peanuts. Geese, in fluorescent belts, draw straight lines in the queue, beaks clacking: no one veers, not even the cups.

A few adjustments are still in order: the sloth in charge of the hourglass inadvertently lengthens the coffee break, and a carp, by mistake, tried to swim back up the siphon with the bill. Nothing that dampens the mustachioed collective’s enthusiasm, which is already announcing an add-on: “shoe shining by gloved octopuses” for the evening service. “This isn’t a spa, it’s a liquid philosophy,” sums up Lilo, wringing out a dishcloth with a flick of their tail, before calling the next order amid big swirls.
