Heat wave, tensions, and a dormouse: Cucuron in shock from an unexpected hostage situation involving a small mammal.
In the sweltering heat of August in Cucuron, a small commune in Vaucluse, the residents witnessed an improbable scene. Indeed, this Tuesday, a dormouse was held under a porcelain saucer on the terrace of the famous bistro ‘Le Cacou’, disturbing the peaceful lunch of the villagers.
At around 1 PM, Claudette, 73, still in shock, recounts: “I was about to enjoy my garden tomato salad when this little dormouse came racing in, climbed onto the table, and pounced on my piece of camembert. And then, Germain, the bistro owner, grabbed a saucer and trapped it underneath!” The incident, although unusual, generated a great deal of tension around the bistro’s terrace.
The little mammal, stuck under the saucer for nearly an hour, was not mistreated, however. Germain, the bistro owner, assured: “I was flustered, I didn’t know what to do. I called the firefighters, explaining that I needed them to come dislodge a dormouse stuck under a saucer in my bistro. They thought it was a joke, but they eventually came. They laughed at me, but at least the dormouse is safe!”
Once the firefighters’ intervention was complete, the dormouse was freed and quickly disappeared into the wild, amid the applause of relieved residents. This event, although surreal, will be etched in the memory of the village of Cucuron. The little hostage situation of the dormouse under the porcelain saucer became a moment of communion among the inhabitants, who do not hesitate to laugh about it: “In the end, it really entertained us. It’s not every day you have a hostage situation at the bistro!” concludes Claudette, with an amused smile on her lips.
