In Saint-Virel-sur-Lande, the decision has set teeth on edge in kitchens and made pie tins tremble.
Bakers have until Saturday to measure their creations, on pain of having to sell them “in irregular slices.”
The new rule was adopted Tuesday evening at the close of a meeting of the festival committee, after a giant pie had blocked access to the community hall. According to the minutes, its 34-centimeter diameter had also “unbalanced the dessert table.”
Residents will now have to use a pan no larger than 28 centimeters to take part in the fair’s snack. A tolerance of two millimeters is allowed, provided the dough does not spill over onto the serving platter.
“We don’t want to humiliate anyone, but the cream had run all the way onto the raffle tickets,” explains Mireille Gauthier, the committee’s secretary and head of dessert inspections.
A measuring workshop will be held Friday in front of the bakery. Rejected pies may be cut up on site, provided each slice has a “reasonably comparable” width.
