Paris, the city of love and now, seemingly, the home of the first running handbag on two legs.
It’s an ordinary day in Paris; pigeons are eating croissant crumbs, artists are painting by the Seine and, oh, look over there! A cherry red Chanel handbag is running on two slender women’s legs down Saint-Honoré Street.
According to several somewhat confused witnesses, the handbag sprung from the window of a second-floor apartment and began to run eastwards, effortlessly overtaking cyclists and joggers. “It was running at a pace that would compete with that of a professional marathon runner,” says Jean-Pierre, a local merchant who got the shock of his life seeing the handbag galloping past his cheese shop.
“I didn’t know that Chanel had released a new line of handbags that are… so active,” said, with an uncertain smile, Brigitte, a tourist from Marseille who managed to capture a photo of the odd spectacle. In her picture, one can see the bag, which appears to be from the fall-winter collection, speeding away, leaving behind a trail of banknotes and lipsticks.
Jean-Pierre tried to chase after the bag, but had to give up after being outpaced several times. “I was hoping I could catch up with it. Imagine how much you could sell a handbag that can run!” he declared, with a hint of amusing disappointment in his voice.
A quote falsely attributed to Coco Chanel is now circulating on social media: “A handbag must be two things: chic and light. Or in this case, fast.” As the handbag continues to run through the city, Parisians remain perplexed but entertained. After all, it’s not every day you see a handbag sprinting.
