KILLER SALES! The last-breath discount shop is killing it downtown

In Tristebourg, a funeral retailer opens at night with prices “to die for” and a “for life” loyalty card of surprisingly short duration.
Between pink neon and “silence guaranteed” bundles, the bargain flirts with marketing’s Grim Reaper.

They’ve slapped “-70% off eternal rest” stickers on the window like on yogurts nearing their sell-by date. Out front, a line of onlookers compares the bundles: “Twilight Comfort” with hypoallergenic cushions, “Imminent Departure” delivered within 24 business hours, and the current hit, “Basic Grave,” shipped flat, three-click assembly, Allen key included. Macabre party vibe: an emcee hollers the promos, smoke machines waft cemetery-flower scent, and a DJ strings together dead-on slow dances.

Inside, nothing’s out of place—except the absurd. Salespeople size up the “tribute circumference” the way others measure a bumper. “We’d rather be prepared than survive,” murmurs a prospect wavering between ebony and oak, while a demonstration of “professional wailing” (a premium option for those short on family) startles the living and soothes the bottom line. Aisle’s star placard: “Satisfied or your money back within 30 days — no one’s ever complained.”

“Our mission is simple: make the big send-off affordable, reliable, and fuss-free. If you find it cheaper elsewhere, we’ll dig the difference,” vows marketing director Blaise Brouillard, a marbled smile on his face. “We even offer three interest-free installments: one for today, two for the hereafter. Rest may be priceless, but we still slashed our prices.”

In the building opposite, curtains tremble under the flashing sign, “You’ll end up here — might as well save.” “My rent has entered its terminal phase,” grumbles a neighbor, who now says she counts hearses like others count sheep. At closing time, the neon goes dark; the city exhales. Until tomorrow, 8 a.m. sharp, reopening for happy hour: a candle thrown in with every future silence.
