In the heart of the 21st century, a man struggles in a sea of red tape to obtain a simple identity card.
In a world where digital technology seems to have simplified daily life, Bernard, a simple citizen, finds himself stuck in a Kafkaesque reality worthy of the novel “The Trial”. His quest to renew his identity card has taken an unrealistic turn, highlighting the inconsistencies of our administrative system.
Five months ago, Bernard, a gentle 47-year-old plumber, began the process to renew his identity card. What seemed to be a formality turned into a long and chaotic epic, illustrating the tentacular labyrinth of our bureaucracy. Due to a typographical error on his first name, he was plunged into an endless spiral of administrative procedures.
“I was asked to provide an original birth certificate, which I did. Then I was redirected to another service to correct the typographical error on my first name. There, I was told that I first had to apply for a change of first name. That’s when I realized that I was caught in a vicious circle,” explains Bernard, with an exasperated look.
The situation became absurd when Bernard realized that he needed his identity card to obtain proof of residence and vice versa. “It was like trying to solve the Sphinx’s riddle in total confusion. In the end, I am still without an identity card, and I don’t know how to get out of this situation,” he laments.
One might think that Bernard’s story is an isolated case, a fortuitous administrative incident. However, many citizens often find themselves engaged in an obstacle course to accomplish simple bureaucratic tasks.
“Life is like administration. You never really know where you’re going, but you always end up getting there,” an anonymous sage would have said, perfectly illustrating our unfortunate plumber’s experience. This exposes the challenges faced by many citizens in the face of a bureaucracy that sometimes seems to escape all logic.
