Global restart at 3:17 a.m.: humanity switches to Guest mode

A nocturnal update has reconfigured our lives: doors, cutlery, and clouds now require subscriptions and passwords that must be sung.
Reality’s customer service promises a fix “as soon as possible,” while mirrors demand a selfie before reflecting.

Upon waking, the kettle refused to heat until the steam had read the new terms of service, and the morning light went into standby until after watching an ad for self-aware light bulbs. Crosswalks now display a QR code on each stripe; without validation, the roadway remains in “draft mode.” According to the new Center for the Optimization of the Ordinary, this “harmonization of the experience” also includes shoes: any unplanned walk is billed at emotional peak pricing.

Residents are learning to negotiate with their utensils. A neighbor had to calibrate his refrigerator: each shelf only unlocks for 45 seconds per hour, and the condensation requires two-factor authentication. Toothbrushes issue statements about the tone used against dental plaque, while forks demand informed consent before every bite. “It’s not that I’m against progress,” sighs Éloi, 34, owner of a sarcastic toaster, “I’d just like to be able to sneeze without receiving a support ticket.”

The connected weather forecast confirmed a drizzle of forgotten passwords at noon and a storm of silent notifications late in the afternoon. In the meantime, residents are rushing to so-called “analog” artifacts: mute spoons, bulbs that know only shadow and light, alarm clocks that ask for nothing more than to be wound. Manufacturers promise an upcoming patch “that will merge Tuesday and Thursday to save temporal bandwidth,” without specifying whether dreaming will remain a free feature or switch to a 14-night trial version.
