Panic at the Beet Roundabout: the You are here sign moved 47 cm

In the village of Saint-Fromage-en-Saules, a tiny shift is upending the steadiest of habits.
Between sidesteps, walking sticks, and queues, the emotional topography wobbles.

On Monday at dawn, several residents swore that the orientation sign at the Beet Roundabout was no longer where it ought to be. After checking with a plumb line and a school ruler, the verdict: 47 centimeters to the northwest. Enough to throw off the village’s morning choreography: the walkers of the “Not-in-a-Hurry” club spilled two paving stones past the bakery’s access line, the postman greeted the hairdresser instead of the cheesemonger, and Rillette the dog missed his reference pole.

“I’ve done the bread run with my eyes closed since 1993. This morning, I nearly said hello to the shop window across the street, for lack of a stable landmark,” gasps Barnabé L., a retired farmer, before brandishing the family spirit level. “We’re not against progress, but 47 centimeters all at once is too much modernity.”

The urban-knitting workshop “Emilie’s Stitches” denies any “woolly cap” on the sign that might have pulled the post askew. The “Hawthorn Palets” demand an official survey with a calibrated decameter, claiming their throwing trajectory depends on the exact axis of roundabout north. For its part, the bakery announces a reorganization of the croissants: the display rotated by a quarter-step to compensate for the shift perceived by customers in the loose queue.

A civic realignment operation is scheduled this evening at 6:12 p.m., a time reputed for sharp shadow, with set squares, string, and participation from the CE2 class, which will bring its foam-board “shadow-meter.” If the adjustment fails, volunteers warn that the Decorated Wheelbarrow Race route, planned for Saturday, will remain “undecidable,” for lack of being able to place the starting line without ruffling the collective sense of direction. Waffles will nonetheless be served at the right counter, barring millimetric mishap.
